Don't Forget to Live

I am a huge dreamer. It’s something I’ve always prided myself on. Dreaming is what made me pursue my passion in photography. And start my own business. Dreaming is what got me through high school, four years that I absolutely hated. I dream about having the perfect life, with perfect children, living in a perfect house with my perfect husband. I dream of opening a quaint little studio right by the beach, and serving tea to my clients as we sit and chat by the sunny windows in cushiony chairs. I dream of travelling the world. I dream about living in perfect bliss, where nothing can ever go wrong, and every day is magical.

I saw this quote once. It said it does not do well to dwell on dreams and forget to live.’ And at first I thought it sounded kind of morbid. But then thinking about it some more, I began to understand it.

Sometimes I get so caught up in my dreams, that when something goes not to plan, I freak out. When my photography business isn’t going the way I want it to, I panic. When my friends or boyfriend make me angry, I get upset and it takes me way longer to forgive them than it should. When I look at my bank account and see that I only have $15 to get me through until my next pay check, and I have other bills due and groceries that need to be done, at times I just start crying. Yes, I know I sound really emotional. But that’s just it, that’s what the quote is about.

When things don’t go the way I’ve dreamt they will go, I need to learn to accept it. Because life definitely won’t be perfect. My husband will piss me off, my kids will make my hair turn grey waay before it should, my house will get messy, I won’t be able to afford a studio for a long, long time. But that’s life, right? Make it beautiful, no matter what happens. I’ll keep dreaming, because I can’t deny that’s who I am, but the most important thing to do is live.

Georgia on my Mind

While most people my age dream of partying it up on spring break in Miami or Mexico or something (not that I’m judging), I’m a little different. I’m a fan of exploring sleepy little American towns, cooking gourmet meals in a gourmet kitchen, hiking up mountains, hiking down mountains, and taking pictures the whole time.

Last year my family went to Blue Ridge, Georgia. It was gorgeous. Even though the weather was cloudy every day, and the temperature didn’t get much higher than 10 degrees Celsius, it was a great trip. We stayed in a beautiful cabin perched on the very top of a mountain, and spent the days exploring and the nights in the hot tub or around the fire.

I want to go again this year, so bad! Soooo mom and dad if you’re reading this, here’s a recap from last year to remind you how much fun we had. And if the Kloosterhof family is reading this, please consider coming too. ;)

I Go Back to December all the Time

Taylor Swift performed beautifully last night at the AMAs. And she also looked stunning. My little girl's growing up.  :')

My Heart Sings a Little Love Song

Music is a huge part of my life. A friend of mine, Becky Call, asked me on twitter if I could recommend some good music for her, and not wanting to over-capacitate the site, I decided to post them on here. Most of these songs or artists you may have never heard of before, but please give them a try. In my opinion, the most talented musicians are the ones that are the least popular.

Sparkly Christmas

Let me set the scene for you. It’s dusk, but when you look out the window all you can see is white, billowing swirls of snow. You’re sitting on a feathery couch with a warm quilt draped around your shoulders. The Christmas tree in the corner of the room stands tall and glittering. A crackling fire in the huge stone fireplace lights the area in a golden, flickering hue. Your family and friends are sitting around you, sipping peppermint tea and laughing over shared memories of Christmas’s past. The air smells of apple pie and evergreen. And you think, what could get better than this?

I love Christmas. I’m a very nostalgic person, and some of my favourite memories come from childhood at this time of year. Anything to do with warm, cozy, sparkling nights spent with family is wonderful.

I remember it was the most exciting thing when we got to decorate the tree. We’d always do it at night, with the lights dimmed in the house and a fire in the fireplace. And my mom would put on the Amy Grant Christmas tape. And the best part was the twinkly yellow lights. My dad would always plug them in before putting them on the tree to make sure they worked, and I remember thinking that the massive pile of sparkliness was one of the most beautiful things I had ever seen. (That’s probably why I love anything glittery to this day.) Sometimes he’d let me wrap the string of lights around me, and I thought I looked like an exotic alien princess or something- it was the amazing. (You can probably tell I was amused by simple things.)

My family never went overboard with gifts. They taught us to remember that Christmas isn’t about presents; it’s about Jesus’ birth, and giving to others, and spending time with family. I’m definitely going to keep this tradition going when I have kids someday. It helps prevent the holidays from becoming a train wreck of stressful shopping, an empty bank account, and whiny, spoiled children.

This year I am living alone, and since I work in retail at the moment, I will be swarmed with those angry, stressed out shoppers I mentioned in the above paragraph. BUT I will not let this ruin my magical view on this time of year. I plan on decking out my apartment with cedar boughs and Christmas lights, baking lots, blasting Christmas music (Amy Grant, here I come), renting every classic holiday movie in Blockbuster, and trying to make it home whenever I can.

And mark my words, someday, when I’m married and have kids, my house and neighbourhood will look like this.

I leave you with some Christmas pictures that make me really happy.

A Whole Lotta Workin'

I’ve been doing a lot of editing lately. Even though I’ve only done 3 shoots in the past little while, I feel like editing is taking more time than it usually does. Not that I’m complaining! I love photography, and editing is just part of the job. But I need to take a break, so I’m writing a blog.

Taylor Swift is 45 minutes away from me right now. I was going to go to Toronto and try to see her today, buut it just didn’t work out. One day Taylor, I will meet you, and you will love me, and we’ll be best friends. And I’ll probably be hired to come along with you on your Speak Now tour as the official photographer or something (haha).

Aside from photography, I’ve been working at a clothing store downtown to pay the bills while I’m living here. It’s good. I actually like it. But I cannot wait until photography is my main source of income and I don’t have to work two jobs anymore.

I’m making a birthday dinner for a friend tomorrow. Apricot & onion chicken with mashed potatoes and vegetables, apple pie, hot brownies with melted ice cream, and whatever else I decide to add to the menu when I go grocery shopping tomorrow.

This is a boring blog, sorry. Life has been quiet lately. Work, editing, sleep, etc. I’ll have an interesting one up soon.
